HIV-1 grows year by year
Some scientists say that the pathogenicity of human immunodeficiency virus-1 grows year by year. The pathogenicity is shown by both the ratio of viral growth and decrease of CD4 T cell counts in the early phase of infection. This is very interesting, but we cannot support this theory completely, because in generally viral pathogenicity decreases according as virus fits the host. If HIV-1 truly grows its virulence, it may be due to its unique cellular tropism. HIV-1 infects and kills CD4+ T cells that play the central role in immunity. The preparation of our immune system cannot follow the quick evolution of this retrovirus without CD4+ T cells. If we cannot have a good way to defeat HIV-1, this virus may evolve its pathogenicity more. This may become a first miserable case of the relation between virus and host. Even then, we know that human being can discover some good method for solving this problem someday. Theoretically, we, virologists, already know the ways to cure or to prevent the infection of HIV-1. The problem is not based on the science, but is based on the politics and economics. The correct information and optimal price of treatment for this disease will help the problem.
