Virologists like to make chimeric viruses

Virologists like to make chimeric viruses, which mean the combined virus that consist of the parts of two different virus species. We make a chimera virus that mainly consists of a well-known virus whereas is partly composed by an unknown virus. We can easily study the unknown virus function partly by this method. For example, we make the recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus having the Ebola viral glycoprotein. The vesicular stomatitis virus has low pathogenicity to human being. We have abundant knowledge about vesicular stomatitis virus, whereas we don’t know well the Ebola virus because it is too danger to study. By making the recombinant virus, we can safely study the Ebola virus.
