At LaGuardia airport, a shabby, but kind man

Before arriving at New York city, I had been advised by my lab member that I must distrust people who are unusually kind for me because they may be deceiver. According to the advice, I determined to be careful against all people around me. Surprisingly, a shabby man came close to me when I tried to buy a bus ticket at LaGuardia airport. Although I didn't say anything, he taught me how to buy the card. Moreover, he gave me an empty Metrocard, and advised me to charge money into it. Finally, he went away from me without robbing something. I suspected him, but I didn't lose anything. The Metrocard was available throughout my trip. It was very mysterious experience. I wonder whether the man was simply kind.
