SARS-CoV-2 spike D614G change enhaces replication and transmission

The SARS-CoV-2 possessing spike (S) protein D614G mutation is a dominant strain currently in the world. It was reported that the D614G mutation enhances the binding of S protein to human cell receptor ACE2. Reverse genetics engineering of this D614G mutant virus revealed that the mutation renders virus to replicate efficiently in primary human target cells. Moreover, by using hACE knock-in mice, ferret and hamster, the authors showed that viral transmissibility was elevated in the presence of this D614G mutation.
