By analyzing the dataset of COVID-19 patient gene expressions, TLR2 and MYD88 expressions were found to be associated with COVID-19 severity. It was also shown that TLR2 senses coronavirus envelope protein as the ligand to induce proinflammatory cytokines. Blocking of TLR2 signaling provided protection against SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis in hACE2 transgenic mice.
