SARS-CoV-2 infection and transmission in the North American deer mouse

North American deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 Wuhan strain infection following intranasal exposure. Viral replication in the upper and lower respiratory tracts was detected, whereas little or no clinical sign was observed. Furthermore, viral RNA was detectable in nasal washes, oropharyngeal and rectal swabs, as well as feces and occasionally urine. The animal to animal transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via direct contact was also observed.
