Two outbreaks of Lassa fever had taken place in 2014 and 2016 in Benin, a West African country; a relatively high mortality rate has been observed. The pathogenesis of the two Lassa virus isolates (Lineages II and VII, L2 and L7 respectively) was evaluated by using a cynomolgus macaque model. The mortality rate of the L7 was higher than that of the L2, which was characterized by uncontrolled viral replication and increased expression of pro-inflammatory mediators. The meningitis and encephalitis were observed in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum in all animals independent of the disease outcome.
