CD164 is a host factor for lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus entry

The cell-surface receptor for Lassa virus and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is alpha-dystroglycan, whereas its presence is not sufficient for these viral infection. Using a genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 loss-of-function screen in the human lung epithelial cell line A549, it was found that CD164 is an additional receptor for LCMV (and for two other arenaviruses, Dandenong virus and LUNK virus). The recognition of CD164 by viral glycoprotein is dependent on the acidic pH in an endolysosomal compartment.
