Direct evidence of active SARS-CoV-2 replication in the intestine

A direct evidence that SARS-CoV-2 was detected in human intestine was reported. By using samples of rectal tract that was operationally collected from a patient with rectal adenocarcinoma who was infected with SARS-CoV-2, the authors demonstrated that viral antigen and RNA were detected by immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR respectively. They also showed the pictures of SARS-CoV-2 virions in the intestinal tracts obtained under electron microscope. No obvious gastrointestinal symptom was reported from this patient.
