A SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate would likely match all currently circulating variants

Comparison of 18,514 SARS-CoV-2 sequences collected since December 2019 revealed that only 11 sites show polymorphisms in >5% of sequences. The mutation frequency is not different between in structural and non-structural proteins, indicates that the mutation is not arise from a selective pressure. The D614G mutation in spike protein becomes dominant, which is reported to be involved in the altered infectivity of this virus. The limited diversity of SARS-CoV-2 should not preclude a single vaccine from providing global protection.
