Sixteen novel lineages of SARS-CoV-2 in South Africa

The first SARS-CoV-2 infection in South Africa was identified on March 5 2020. Approximately 50 % of all known African SARS-CoV-2 infection was counted by November 2020 in South Africa. Sequence analyses identified new 16 lineages in this country, most of which were not identified in elsewhere. Hospital outbreak was the critical amplifier of such multiple lineages.
