Longitudinal profiling of respiratory and systemic immune responses reveales myeloid cell-driven lung inflammation in severe COVID-19

By analyzing cell types and their transcriptome and cytokine responses in blood and respirator tract of COVID-19 patients, the protective response of T cells were shown to be correlated with reduced disease severity. The myeloid cells in the respiratory tract of COVID-19 patient showed hyperinflammatory signatures, and their retention in the tissue was well-correlated with high mortality. High levels of myeloid chemoattractants in airways is considered to be involved in the recruitment of inflammatory cells in the respiratory tract.
