Increased complement activation is a distinctive feature of severe SARS-CoV-2 infection

The circulating markers of complement activation were elevated in patients with COVID-19 when they were compared with those with influenza and non-COVID-19 respiratory failure. Among complement pathways such as classical pathway, alternative pathway and lectin pathway, the alternative pathway was shown to be most prevalent in patients with severe COVID-19. The complement activation is a distinctive feature of COVID-19, and may be used for risk prognostication and drug discovery.
