A SARS-CoV-2 variant possessing D614G mutation in the S protein (variant B.1) is broadly distributed in the world. Moreover, B.1.351 variant is derived from South Africa, which contains L18F, D80A, D215G, 242-244 deletion, K417N, E484K, N501Y and D614G in the S protein. Sera from acutely infected and convalescent COVID-19 patients exhibit reduction in neutralization to the B1.351 variant compared to the B.1 variant. In addition, Sera from Moderna-mRNA-vaccinated individuals show similar result.
